Concord firefighters double as FEMA specialists for Hurricane Dorien

For nearly two weeks, Concord Assistant Fire Chief Walter Latta,Jr. and firefighter Todd Niemi were away from family and friends as they answered a special call of duty.

On Friday, Aug. 30, the Concord duo were told to suit up as part of Massachusetts Task Force 1, one of 28 FEMA US&R Task Forces spread throughout the continental United States trained and equipped by FEMA to handle structural collapse. Their mission: assist Florida with Hurricane Dorian.

Based in Beverly, 45 members of MA-TF1 drove down that Friday from 9 p.m. until 5 p.m. on Saturday. They stopped once in Florence, South Carolina, as there was a possibility they would set up there instead of Florida……
